Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd introduced a new off-road vehicle, the Thar, priced at 599,000 rupees ($13,252) at showrooms in New Delhi.
Mahindra & Mahindra also plans to sell a cheaper variant of the Thar, priced at 447,000 rupees, for the rural market.
Thar is a refined version of the Mahindra ‘s iconic Jeep which it assembled and sold in India decades earlier. It aimed to cater to a niche segment, will help Mahindra reinforce its position as the biggest sport utility vehicle maker in India by sales.
Mahindra has spent 50 million rupees in developing the product and already exports it to South Africa and Italy, said Rajesh Jejurikar chief executive of Mahindra’s automotive sector.
The vehicles will be assembled at the company’s two west Indian plants in Nasik and Mumbai.
Mahindra currently sells the Scorpio, Bolero and Xylo utility vehicles, the Logan sedan as well as light and heavy trucks in India.which recently signed the final contract to acquire 70% in Ssangyong Motor Co.
